Our Spring Social on Friday was a lot of fun!  We had 400+ students in attendance, a great turnout!  The DJ from Party Time Texas, the photo booth from Marky Booth, and the Mister Softee ice cream truck were all huge hits with the students!  Thank you to all the wonderful parent volunteers, administrators and staff -- Ms. Kinnard, Ms. Goodwin, Mr. Mitchell, Ms. Wahl, Mr. Schlosser, Ms. Zhang, Ms. Cano, Officer Chris -- and custodial staff who helped with planning, selling tickets, manning the bathroom hallway and concession stand, helping with the ice cream truck line (Ms. Kinnard & Ms. Cano -- it was quite the crush!), general crowd control, and cleanup.  We were thrilled to be able to finally have this social event for our Schimelpfenig students and hope that everyone had a wonderful time.

This past Wednesday, we had a watch party in the library.  A few of us gathered with Ms. Kinnard and two of our Schimelpfenig counselors, Ms. Klena and Mr. Schlosser, to watch and discuss the program Straight Talk About Youth Mental Health and Parenting.  The speaker from Grant Halliburton Foundation shared helpful information about youth mental health issues, including recognizing signs of depression and suicidal thoughts in our pre-teens and teenagers.  Further information and resources are available on the Grant Halliburton website at:  Grant Halliburton Foundation

Social connectedness, sleep, and physical activity associated with better mental health among youth during the COVID-19 pandemic

The National Institutes of Health recently issued a news release on a longitudinal survey data of more than 3,000 adolescents ages 11-14 recorded before and during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.  The study found that supportive relationships with family and friends and healthy behaviors, like engaging in physical activity and better sleep, appeared to shield against the harmful effects of the pandemic on adolescents' mental health. Get the full news release here.
